What Kind of Pilot Buys an S-TEC?
A pilot who likes to turn jet fuel into noise
Make that 100 pounds of fuel every 6.4 minutes at 40,000 feet, according to an October 1997 Flying article written by J. Mac McClellan about the Folland Gnat.
When Tom Foley needed an autopilot for his aircraft, he choose an S-TEC 60-2. S-TEC adjusted the autopilot gains specifically for the Gnat since they are capable of maximum air speeds of 636 mph and have a ceiling of 48,000 feet, and Foley's Gnat is also approved for aerobatic flight.
The 60-2 was installed over four years ago and has worked flawlessly since then. "It permits me to fly in IMC conditions I wouldn't fly in otherwise and makes normal en route flying in all conditions a lot more enjoyable. I've logged 500 hours or so on the plane since the System 60 was installed," said Foley.
