We Get Letters!

Sharpe Johnson, Owner of a 260 Comanche recently sent this letter to the Comanche Society Magazine. He sent a copy to S-TEC to share with you:

I am writing this letter in hopes that it may help some more of our subscribers find a really first class avionics shop and to commend a fine avionics manufacturer.

I purchased my PA 24-260 B Comanche N9205P in 1987. It was already equipped with an S-TEC altitude hold. After I purchased it, I discovered that it held altitude perfectly except at 5000 or 5500 ft. When engaged at either of these altitudes, the plane would either climb or dive. I took it to an avionics shop (I won't mention the name), and was told that it could not be fixed and that this was confirmed by S-TEC Corp. Well, I lived with this situation for the next 10 years thinking I had an irreparable problem.

In 1997, I made a fortunate change to Thrasher Avionics in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, owned and operated by Horace and Dell Thrasher. I took my plane in for its bi-annual altimeter and transponder check, and I don't even know how the subject came up, but I undoubtedly must have mentioned the quirk in my S-TEC altitude hold.

The next time I heard from Dell, he told me that he had contacted S-TEC Corp. and that they were going to send him a new transducer for the unit and if that fixed the problem, that would be fine and to just send the old transducer back to them. This was done, but it did not fix the problem.

The next thing I know, a Mr. Bob Jones of S-TEC Corp. called me long distance at work one day who told me that they were going to do their best to solve my problem and at no cost to me, just as if it were still in warranty. S-TEC then sent Mr. Thrasher a new computer for my unit and this solved the problem. At 5000 ft. it held just like a little lady.

I hope that any of your readers who need a fine avionics shop or need a fine piece of auto pilot equipment, will remember Thrasher Avionics in Tuscaloosa, AL. and S-TEC Corporation.

Sincerely,
Sharpe W. Johnson, M.D.
