Avionik Straubing - Atting, Germany

Gunter Hemmel's company slogan is his spin on the tried and true "Do it right the first time". It's important to notice, however, that they focus their quality workmanship on the customer need side of the equation.
Avionik Straubing has been S-TEC's Number 1 International Dealer as long as we've been presenting the award. That's for good reason. Their success has a foundation on the excellent credentials and background of Gunter and his wife Iris, and the company policies and practices they have established since starting their business in the late 70's.
Gunter got his Bachelors degree in Communication Electronics from the University of Munich. Shortly thereafter he started flying, getting both his Private Pilots License and his IFR license for both singles and twins. This focus on aviation led his career to aircraft electronics. He quickly obtained his LBA (Germany's equivalent of the FAA) Avionics Inspector's ratings for Class 1, 3, and 4 for COM, NAV, ADF, ATC, WxÐRadar, and Autopilots.
After several years with various avionics shops in Augsburg and Munich, Gunter started Avionik Straubing and soon after got married. Iris quickly became an integral part of the business, has been instrumental in the overall success of Avionik Straubing, and has earned her own reputation as an expert in aircraft avionics.
From the outset autopilots have been a major component in their business. They established total system troubleshooting and repair capability down to the component level right from the beginning. This led to the need to open an instrument facility to service autopilot instrumentation. Today, Avionik Straubing operates a full line Avionics Sales and Service operation with LBA, JAA, and FAA certification.
Their capabilities are known all over Europe and the Middle East and their customers come to Atting from as far away as Turkey, Spain and Israel.
Avionik Straubing's history with S-TEC goes back to their establishment as a dealer in 1981 and we have been partners since. One very valuable role they have played is that of an intermediary between S-TEC and the LBA getting the S-TEC pilot operating handbooks translated into German, a necessary step getting the S-TEC systems certified in Germany.
When we asked Gunter why he has been so successful selling S-TEC products he states their success is the result of:
1. A strong advertising program
2. Complete service capability on all S-TEC products
3. In-house training
4. A large inventory of spare parts including a loaner pool
5. Precise and rapid S-TEC installations
6. The ability to discover outdated, inoperative autopilot systems in conversation with customersLast, but not least, in a well-established business plan, is their active participation in the Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA). Gunter calls it "a big family sharing common problems but also challenges".
